What causes blocked drains

What causes blocked drains in short is anything which prevents the smooth flow of water through the drain and/or pipework. This can be a physical item such as something which has been trapped like a child’s toy dropped down the toilet. Or it can be a build up of a mixture of waste such as fat in the kitchen sink or hair in the bath drain which has slowly built up and clogging the natural flow of water.

Preventing Blocked Drains

The best method of protection as always is prevention. If you can stop the build-up taking place, then you should never have a problem with blocked drains. However, this is easier said than done as you are rarely able to see the build up taking place as it takes place inside the pipes or underneath a closed drain. Also, sometimes it is just out with our control such as the build up of leaves or dirt in an outside drain. This can then prevent proper drainage from nearby property, causing flooding or at the very least a foul smell.

There are of course measures which you can take such as clearing debris and waste from a drain and doing your best to prevent any waste or sediment from entering the drain in the first place. For example, clearing hair away from the bath drain or clearing food debris away from the kitchen sink; clearing food waste away from plates before placing them in the dish washer. These all help prevent the build up taking place or at least reduce the chance or frequency of a blocked drain happening.

You can also actively clear your drains and pipes on a regular basis with some home remedies or shop bought products.

Diagnosing a Blocked Drain/Pipe

In diagnosing a blocked drain or pipe, firstly see if it is a complete blockage or a partial blockage. A complete blockage means that nothing can move past the obstruction. No water will flow in either direction. A partial blockage is when water can move but just not as freely as it should. If it is a partial blockage, you may be able to use the pressure of a water flow to break up the clogged area. This could be by running the tap, flushing the toilet etc or by introducing a second water supply such as a water jet or even just a kettle of boiling water poured from a height.

(Just proceed with caution when using boiling water, especially when poured from height due to splash backs and possibilities of scalding yourself. Wear protective clothes and only pour from a manageable height which you are comfortable with.)

Clearing a Blocked Outside Drain

Having a blocked outside drain is quite often out with our control and is just one of those unfortunate things in life that must be dealt with. Common examples of these kinds of problems are drains being clogged up by leaves, cement from building work, dirt from the roads, roots from nearby trees or just a build up or grass, rubbish, oils or fats from the surrounding area.

Having a blocked outside drain usually impacts on the household in a number or ways. The blockage may back up into the house so that the normal water flow from the house is prevented. The blockage may be preventing a through flow of water and stagnating causing a foul sewage smell which soon permeates the surrounding properties. Having a blocked outside drain is generally something which must be acted on promptly due to the increased water flow rates and it often has to be dealt with by a professional drain cleaner.
